Larry Shi, a junior at TJHSST, is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Illumony. Since elementary and middle school,
he has participated in various after-school clubs such as MathCounts, Science Bowl, Rocketry, and the Rubik’s Cube club.
He has also attended math competitions such as MathCounts, AMC, AIME, and JMO, and conducted research in science and
participated in the Science Fair. Shi believes that everyone should have access to such learning opportunities.
“My past experiences helped me realize the true impact of these opportunities early in my life that have, quite frankly,
shaped my character and opened my eyes to the intrinsic beauty of STEM and other extra-curriculum activities ever since,”
Shi said. “I recognize that there are many low-income students, many of which are in Fairfax County, one of the richest
counties in the US, that don’t have such opportunities, and we’re trying to change that.” As the COO of Illumony, Shi
leads the operation and logistics for Illumony’s outreach to socioeconomically disadvantaged students. He hopes that his
dedication to the nonprofit will empower more young minds with an interest in learning and the realization that they will
grow up in an advanced, STEM-based future that they will lead. He is also in charge of Illumony’s outreach services to
local senior communities and makes efforts to give out to these communities.
