Oliver Tu is attending Brown University after graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
(TJHSST) 2022. He has loved STEM from a very young age. He attended his first math competition in the
3rd grade and later attended some of the most selective math programs, including Math Enrichment
Camp and Math Enrichment Weekly Mentoring Sessions, both owned and run by Mr. Vern Williams.
He was admitted and completed the Awesome Math Summer Program, the top math competition
program, at Cornell University.
He was a member of the TJHSST Varsity Math Team. His team finished 55 th in the nation at the
American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) among all competitors in 2009. Since elementary
school, he has attended 10+ math competitions around the nation, including ARML, Carnegie
Mellow Informatics and Mathematics Competition (CMIMC), Lehigh University Math Competition,
Carderock Math Competition, Berkeley Math Tournament, The Exeter Math Club Competition, and
MathCounts.
He was also a member of the TJHSST Physics Club. He is proficient in Python and Java and has been
volunteering at Hope Chinese School to teach computer science for the past two years. He has also
self-taught HTML and Style Sheet.
Through Illumony, he hopes to provide his knowledge, skills, passion, and services to everyone in
his community who is interested in improving their STEM skills, as well as hopes to inspire young
learners.
He was a captain of the TJHSST Varsity Football Team and a key member for both the offence and
defense of the team. He was also a Principal Second Violinist in The Capitol Symphonic Youth
Orchestras. In his free time, he enjoys finding new recipes, cooking, and trying different cultural
foods.
